12th Annual Walk to Remember - May 3rd, 2009

The 12th Annual Walk to Remember was a great success raising over $14,000 gross to benefit our programs and services. Over 180 participants walked this year. The children's entertainment included Erick Traplin, crafts, puzzles, and memory boxes that were decorated.

The Honourable Peter Braid, Honourable Elizabeth Witmer, and the Honourable Stephen Woodworth presented prizes to the top pledge earners. The first place pledge winner was “Team Kelly” in memory of Kelly Weatherall, the 2nd place went to Jamie Bickerton and family in memory of David Clark and third place went to Victor and Amy Daterra in memory of Brooke Daterra.

The Walk to Remember is a special event that honors loved ones of all ages and walks of life. It is an event that captures the essence of BFO, a community of the bereaved helping others along their grief journey. The Walk itself symbolizes this path of healing. At first the journey seems long and daunting, and the destination of hope appears very far in the distance. But step by step, and over time, we can begin to recognize the significance of living and loving is not about arriving at the end, it is about the journey itself. Fundraisers such as the walk allow us to provide programming for BFO.

We would like to thank the walk committee Lynne Christensen, Pat Keller, Elizabeth Hirn-Crane for all of their help! As well as our major sponsors, Cober printing, / The Record, / Jana Cundari from Mortgage Intelligence/ Alexanian Carpet / Norampac / Conestoga Roofing / Hauser Furniture / Olympia Resurfice Corp / Jim & Karen Brophey / Toyota, TMMC / Airways Transit / Dr. Kumie Pather Dentistry / Parkview Cemetery / Silvercreek Photography / City of Waterloo/ Henry Walser Funeral Homes/ Erick Traplin/CTV-Dave MacDonald.

  Memorial Butterfly Release

Our memorial butterfly release is a beautiful event that helps to express our sorrow for the loss of our loved one and honour their memory.

According to Indian legend, if anyone desires a wish to come true they must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it. Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly cannot reveal the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all. In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit always grants the wish. So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, the wish will be taken to the heavens and be granted.

The butterflies for this year's event have been provided by Greenway Blooming Centre. These butterflies have been tagged by "Monarch Watch", an educational outreach program based at the University of Kansas. Monarch Watch engages citizen scientists in large scale research projects. This program produces real data related to a serious conservation issue. In the North (Canada and the U.S.), monarchs face direct habitat destruction caused by new roads, housing developments and agricultural expansion.

Join us for our Annual Memorial Walk and Butterfly Release, Sunday, September 12, 2010, 2 pm at Williamsburg Cemetery.

Through our participation in this program, BFO hopes to educate the community about conserving the natural habitats that are critical to the survival of the monarch butterfly and its magnificent migrations.
