Let the good times BOWL! Recap

On April 27th, more than 70 bowlers hit the lanes at Kingpin Bowlounge at Bingemans and raised over$7000 in support of BFO-MR! Prizes were awarded for most funds raised, high and low scores, and best team spirit. The fun didn’t end on the lanes though – the raffle tables were overflowing with generously donated prizes (including a BlackBerry!) We were grateful for the enthusiasm everyone showed for this first-time, fun family event. Click here to see pictures from the event and we hope to see you next year!

BFO-MR would also like to thank our sponsors:

Charity Golf Tournament Recap

On behalf of Bereaved Families of Ontario – Midwestern Region, I would like to thank everyone for your support to our 16th Annual Golf Tournament. This year we were able to double our net revenue at $18,500 and 128 golfers plus a few dinner guests enjoyed the day with many positive comments!

These funds will allow BFO to offer a wide range of support programs to those suffering the death of a loved one; acknowledging that different people and circumstances require a variety of means for support and healing. Your awareness of this need in our community, and your personal and/or financial assistance to this fundraising event, assures that we can continue to provide these vital services within the Region.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated and we hope you will consider supporting us again next year.

Spousal Loss Group Change

Bereaved Families of Ontario-Midwestern Region (BFO-MR) is pleased to announce that our widows/widowers support group will now be facilitated by The Hummingbird Centre for Hope. BFO-MR started this much needed group in the spring of 2009 as an extension of our bereavement services.
Since its inception in 2011, The Hummingbird Centre for Hope has offered continuing peer-to-peer support in Waterloo Region to spouses who are recently widowed and who have dependent children to help ease the burdens they now find themselves carrying. With this transition, each agency can focus on their strengths and ensure our community receives the best support we have to offer.

For more information on our services, please visit www.hummingbirdcentreforhope.com.

JNP Volleyball Tournament

On August 16th and 17th, 2014 Bingeman’s in Kitchener is hosting the sixth 2 day co-ed charity beach volleyball tournament. The tournament is held in memory of Jason N. Pearson who was killed in a hit and run near Grand Bend on July 25th, 2009.

This event has been a great way to help Jason’s family cope and get closer with some of the friends of Jason that they didnot previously know. This year, all the proceeds from the tournament are going to Bereaved Families of Ontario Midwestern Region, an organization that helps families cope with the death of a loved one. Last year over $5000 was raised and donated to Bereaved Families of Ontario – Midwestern Region.

The cost per team is $260 before July 30th, 2014(early bird) or $300 after July 30th, 2014 (All teams require at least 2 females). Teams are groups of 4 (Comp/Elite) or 6 (Comp/Int/Rec).

To Register click here. Check out the event Facebook page here and watch a video from the tournament last year!

                          See you there!

The Summertime Challenge of Grief

Marta Felber, a psychologist who is well acquainted with her own experience of grief, often writes about loneliness. She advocates recognizing it and expressing it, on paper or aloud, physically and with tears. When feelings become blocked she does something to reach them, like reading cards or letters her loved ones sent and thinking about the ways she misses them. You can find and hold something special that belonged to your loved one. Feelings are not to be avoided. Can alone times be enriched? Can it become solitude? Creating an alone place in your home may become a part of self care that will be rewarding for you. Keep it simple, uncluttered, and comfortable. Take a regular break to go there for prayer or meditation, reading poems or whatever inspires you. You might try creating a mantra that resonates with you like “grant me peace”, “I shall survive”, or “we shall overcome.” Say it several times to yourself. You might also try talking to your loved one or writing a letter to them. Or you may try writing a conversation in which you talk to your spouse and then write his or her answers. There may be a season, day of the week, or time of day that is most lonely for you. Prepare for it by listing things you can do: ask a friend to go to church with you, call someone just to talk, visit a local park, check for local baseball games you can attend. Just getting outdoors can help to fill in those spaces in our lives when we are alone. Try doing something on your own and make it special by dressing up, fixing a nice meal, sitting at the table instead of eating in front of the TV. If a friend or family member can’t attend an event with you, try it on your own.
A woman whose spouse died found  it easier to drive to her hometown for a summer vacation because she knew she would be met there by old friends and family. Driving alone was a challenge but simply putting her husband’s hat on the seat of the car next to her gave her enough feeling of connection to make it tolerable. She  planned a route that would give her breaks to get out, walk, stretch and enjoy  the scenery along the way. She was determined not to miss out on her summer vacation. You too may find that the anticipation is more difficult than the  actual event. You too may want the old familiar feeling of joy. Trust the process of grief, take time to be with all your feelings. Notice the difference between alone and lonely.  Find your ways of creating a pleasant solitude during the days ahead.
