What family means to us

Family.

What does that word mean to you? For many, it’s associated with the traditional make-up of biological parents, children and relatives. Look up the definition online and it says as much: “a group of one or more parents and their children living together as a unit”.

We know that family means so much more than that, and that sometimes the most important people in our circles of support aren’t related to us by blood at all. Our chosen family.

Yes, we are Bereaved “Families” in name. And we know that to be truly accessible to and inclusive of the broad range of grief experiences that exist, we need to be clear about what we mean by family at BFO.

Family can be anyone with whom you share a relationship. Any kind of relationship. The definition is constantly evolving, and how you define family is your choice alone. Your grief is valid, and we are here to support you.
